Goldoni belongs, next to Moli?re, Shakespeare or Gogol, to the most often played authors of classical comedies. In recent years, we, not deliberately, but in any case unjustly, neglected him. We will change this with pleasure just by the premiere of one of his most popular plays. ‘Brawling in Chioggia‘ was written in 1762 and Goldoni used in it his experience from the time when he worked as an auxiliary assistant for the court. Quarrels of fishermen´s wives and fights of their men will come up to the judge, who, however, has no chance to understand and learn the truth in a flood of lively testimonies. Goldoni´s unrepeatable display of human characters and untamed passions came to the Czech scenes surprisingly only in the fifties of the last century, it means at a time dazzled by the wave of Italian neorealism.‘Brawling in Chioggia‘ belongs to the plays which are from one side timeless, and from the other side they are worth appearing in a new context. In our ensemble we have found a perfect cast for this comedy and especially a director whose staging of Goldoni's another play - ‘Servant of Two Masters‘ in 1994 - is still a permanent star of the repertoire of the National Theatre.
