Milan Kundera is probably the most significant living Czech author. He was already a star in Prague in the 1960s, but in Paris, where he emigrated in the following decade, he achieved literally a world fame. The comedy Jacques and His Master has a subtitle Tribute to Denis Diderot, whose Jacques the Fatalist became an inspiration for his play. How is it with human fates and human freedom? A lord is asking Jacques: "Are you such a silly man because it's written up there? Or is it written up there because it was known about you that you were a silly man?
