The opera ensemble continues in the flourishing trend of successful musical performances in Liberec by another musical production, My Fair Lady by the composer Frederick Loewe and a librettist Alan Jay Lerner. The world premiere took place on Broadway in 1956 and the direct inspiration for the creators of the musical was a famous play by George Bernard Shaw Pygmalion from the year 1912. A story of a bachelor, linguistics professor Henry Higgins and a bold, cheeky, filthy and uncontrollable Liza Doolittle, who meet by the threads of fate in an improvident moment, but each of them in a different life situation, brings in fact a fragile probe into the lives of two different worlds. Lisa, longing for a job of a shop assistant in a florist´s is trying to refine and neaten her language and her manners just under the guidance of Professor Higgins – but for her teacher it is nothing but a bet with his friend, amusement, by which he wants to prove that creatures like Lisa can be tamed and primarily transformed beyond recognition. Playing with human fate, however, brings not only happy moments for the players of the story themselves, but even in a seeming comedy we come across a question of how many rules are determined by ourselves in such a play. After its premiere on Broadway it didn´t take long waiting for a film adaptation decorated by many Oscars, directed by George Cukor, with the stars Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harisson.
